Concurrent BS/Masters Program Overview
The following is an overview produced by the College of Engineering
What:
The concurrent BS/Master's program allows engineering students to begin taking graduate classes during their "senior year" and to complete requirements for both the BS degree and the Masters degree concurrently over 2 years.
Why:
- Much greater selection of graduate courses (many graduate courses are taught only on alternate years)
- Possibly combine Senior Design and Graduate Design Project or Thesis*
- Only 1 additional year to earn Masters degree
- 150 Total Credits for both BS and MastersΦ
How:
- Complete your junior year in engineering with a 3.3 gpa both overall and over the last 60 credit hours
- Apply for and be accepted into the concurrent program by your department no later than the last semester of "junior year" (first year in the concurrent program)
- Request department advisor be appointed by the department head†
- Fill out a 2-year plan for completing BS and Master’s requirements concurrently
- Fill out an application for admission to the Graduate School (indicate departmental acceptance into the concurrent program in upper right corner of first sheet)
- Fill out and submit Split Registration Form (indicate departmental acceptance into concurrent program) each remaining semester you are in the concurrent program
- Pay undergraduate tuition during your "senior year" (first year in program)
- Prepare for, register and pass the GRE‡ prior to October 1st for spring graduation and March 1st for fall graduation of "senior year"
- Be formally accepted into the Graduate School by November 1st for spring graduation and April 1st for fall graduation of "senior year"
- Request appointment of graduate committee by department
- Secure committee and departmental approval of proposed Master's program
- Pay graduate tuition during your second year in the concurrent program
- Complete application for BS graduation the first semester of “senior year”
- Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA in the approved courses of your concurrent program
* Some may wish to delay Senior Design until the 2nd year of concurrent program providing an opportunity for more preparatory classes. Some Senior Design projects may provide excellent background for 3-credit Design Project for Plan B, Plan C, or ME program or 6-credit thesis for a Plan A program.
Φ 153 credits for Plan C MS. Technical Elective requirement is reduced by 6 credits for BS Degree. All graduate degree requirements are unchanged.
† This advisor may become official major professor after formal acceptance into graduate program
